A grouse hunting classic + this week’s Birdshot Podcast 🎧

This week I just finished reading Drummer in the Woods by Burton Spiller for the first time after Andy Wayment recommended it back on episode #326. One thing is for certain—Mr. Spiller had a passion for ruffed grouse, grouse hunting, and grouse dogs. I can certainly see why this is considered one of the classics.

For a taste of what the book has to offer, here’s one of my favorite passages:

“The butt of the gun touched Bill’s shoulder and cradled there with a sure firmness that brought the comb hard against his cheek at the precise instant the bird reached the tops of the trees. The crash of nitro woke the startled echoes, and for a moment the bird hung motionless against the cobalt sky ere it came crashing down. 'Nice work,' Bill said, when the pointer came proudly in with the bird.”

I don’t know about you, but that certainly gets me dreaming about fall days afield!
